The Pastel Journal

Magazine

Pastel Journal covers topics of interest to working pastelists as well as those who work in pastel as an additional medium along with those who are just experimenting with the medium.

A Lifetime of Learning

The Pastel Journal

Art Alive • For artist and painting instructor Anne Strutz, the sensory experience of viewing works of art in person is unmatched.

Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod Celebrates its 25th Annual Exhibition • The juried show featured paintings by internationally recognized artists that showcased a diversity of artistic styles and subjects.

A Meeting of Giants • Winold Reiss, versed in diverse American cultures, created a portrait that celebrates a Harlem Renaissance intellectual.

From the Jury Room • Having served as a juror and as an organizer of juries—as well as being an artist who has been the recipient of both “accepted” and “rejected” notices—Karin Richter has gleaned some tips that can help artists hoping to gain entry into a juried exhibition or to make a splash in an art competition.

Sicilian Summer • A painting trip to Sicily set the scene for pastelist Bill Cone to immerse himself in some of the island’s lesser-known—and most inspiring—destinations.

Capturing the Character of Indigenous Plants • Pastel is Margaret Larlham’s medium of choice for recording the elements of southern California’s ever-changing landscape.

First Person Rural • Carol Strock Wasson identifies the appealing light, color and shapes of Indiana farm country and re-creates the idea of the scene.

The Pastel Print

Tips for Painting Snow

Blanket of Snow • Sunlit snow and shadowed snow are full of color, but you have to look to see it—and to see it, you have to consider the light. When light shines on an object, certain colors reflect off that object while other colors are absorbed—but the magic really happens within the eye of the viewer.

Telling the Human Story • Accomplished in rendering almost any subject realistically and poetically, Michele Ashby uses her art to convey statements about humanity.

FROM PEOPLE TO PLACES

SIGNED, SEALED, DELIVERED

EXPRESSIONS OF ETHEREAL BEAUTY • With a unique process that alternates between construction and destruction, LORIANN SIGNORI utilizes field studies, memory and imagination to create paintings of sublime beauty.

Untold Possibilities

From CONSERVATION to CREATION • Susanna Griswold’s background in art history and preservation informs the technique and psychological depth of her portraiture.

ARTIST’S TOOLBOX

BIG WINS in the WINDY CITY • The International Association of Pastel Societies had a lot to celebrate at its 2021 juried gallery exhibition. First, there were the 175 knockout pastels to wow and amaze. Secondly, the show was open to visitors, who were able to encounter the work live and in-person—in a great space.

THE BEST ADVICE I EVER GOT • Getting juried into a preeminent exhibition is a major accomplishment that requires not only talent but also plenty of effort, a commitment to growth and persistence. We asked a few of the juried-in artists to share a piece of advice that has contributed to their success.
