In a society of liars, who do you trust?
It is 1585 in Venice, and three months have passed since Laura della Scala solved her sister's murder after joining the Segreta, a powerful society of women who trade protection for secrets. Now Laura is engaged to her true love, Roberto, and she has never been happier. But the night Laura is sent on her first important mission for the Segreta, Roberto is found with the body of a dead woman in his room. Halim, an irresistibly handsome Turkish prince on a diplomatic visit to the city, identifies the woman as his sister and insists that Roberto be executed for her murder, or the Ottoman Empire will attack Venice. Laura is desperate to save both her city and her fiancé. But as the evidence against Roberto builds and Laura finds herself increasingly drawn to Halim, she begins to wonder whether everything Roberto told her was a lie. What Laura discovers is a conspiracy that involves nearly everyone she knows.
“Once again, feisty, fearless, feminist Laura narrates her story in the present tense, giving it a breathless pace, nail-biting excitement and female insight as she sashays along the canals and corridors and through the slums and palaces of Venice, unraveling secrets and breaking hearts. Romance, revenge, treachery and intrigue.”—Kirkus Reviews
“Full of intrigue, romance, and adventure, this sequel to Cross My Heart is relentless in its pace and fully realized in its vivid historical setting.”—Booklist
“Renaissance Venice gets an injection of Pretty Little Liars in Sasha Gould’s Heart of Glass, the follow-up to Cross My Heart. . . . From gondolas to galas, Laura takes on the status quo—and turns it upside down in her quest for the truth.”—TeenReads.com

Gr 9 Up-Gould's sequel to Cross My Heart (Delacorte, 2012) once again finds high-society Venetian Laura della Scala in a tricky situation. This time, her fiance, Roberto, stands accused of murdering a young foreigner. Laura still belongs to the Segreta, a clandestine society of women who wield secrets like the deadliest of swords. But when her appeals to the group for help in clearing Roberto's name are not answered, she takes matters into her own hands. Meanwhile, Halim, a visiting Turkish ambassador, singles Laura out to give him a tour of the city. She is oddly drawn to the dark prince but then learns that the murdered girl was his sister. Now the Turkish fleet threatens Venice's shores with attack, Roberto has mysteriously escaped from prison and disappeared, and somehow Laura's old enemy Carina resurfaces-not dead, but very much alive, and bent on revenge. Laura doesn't get a break from action and neither will readers, who can just about feel their own slipper-clad feet racing through the cobbled streets of Venice from one crisis to another. Clumsy segues between action sequences and relentless plot twists notwithstanding, Gould offers a fast-paced adventure. Readers who stick with this one will be rewarded with an exciting tale of romance, intrigue, lies, and of course-secrets.-Tara Kehoe, Plainsboro Public Library, NJ

After solving her sister's murder in Cross My Heart (2012), 16-year-old Laura once again becomes perilously implicated in the secrets and scandals of 16th-century Venice when her fiance is accused of murder. Laura's blissfully betrothed to the doge's handsome son Roberto. As a member of the Segreta, a clandestine society of upper-class women who trade secrets to protect Venice, Laura's given her first solo assignment. The same night, an unidentified woman is murdered in Roberto's rooms, leading to his arrest. Convinced Roberto's innocent, Laura seeks help from the Segreta, but she finds herself distracted by the attentions of rakish Prince Halim, who's heading a diplomatic mission from Turkey. When Halim identifies the murdered woman as his sister and threatens to attack Venice unless Roberto dies, the doge's rivals seize power. As Laura works to save both Roberto and Venice, she discovers a link among the murder, Halim's visit, Venice's political takeover and a vengeful plot by an old enemy determined to punish Laura and the Segreta. Once again, feisty, fearless, feminist Laura narrates her story in the present tense, giving it a breathless pace, nail-biting excitement and female insight as she sashays along the canals and corridors and through the slums and palaces of Venice, unraveling secrets and breaking hearts. Romance, revenge, treachery and intrigue. (Historical fiction. 12 & up)COPYRIGHT(2013) Kirkus Reviews, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.

Laura's life is nearly perfect now: she's engaged to her love, Roberto, and the Segreta, the all-female secret society she joined in Cross My Heart, is as powerful as ever. Then Roberto is accused of murdering an Ottoman princess, and the empire threatens war with Venice. The conspiracies and political intrigue tip into outlandishness in this sequel, but it's an exhilarating ride.(Copyright 2013 by The Horn Book, Incorporated, Boston. All rights reserved.)
