Learning by Heart

The Pastel Journal

PSA Fabulous at 50 • As the Pastel Society of America hosts its 50th Annual Exhibition, PSA President Jimmy Wright discusses the society's impact on the pastel community over the years and shares his hopes for fhe organizafion's future.

In Memoriam: Harvey Dinnerstein

Hats Off to the Artist • Although less well known than his ballet works, Edgar Degas' milliner series deserves attention.

There's a Grant for That • Some artists require extensive funding for large-scale creative endeavors. Many times, however, what an artist needs is a smaller disbursement with no strings attached. For the latter, a professional development grant may be just the thing. Not familiar with them? Daniel Grant offers an introduction.

Tale of Two Surfaces • Painting the same subject on two entirely different papers reveals fresh creative possibilities.

THE DARK SIDE

demonstration Red Sky 1

The Land of Babusias • When Tatijana Jacenkiw made two trips to Ukraine, the journeys had a huge impact—both personally and artistically.

Complements of the Artist • Create visual impact and color harmony with a complementary palette.

COMING UP ROSES • Daniel J. Keys uses the power of pastel pigments to recreate some of nature's most spectacular color displays.

demonstration Ephemeral Glow • There's little that I enjoy more than painting roses. I've admired and grown them for almost my entire life, and I find them to be the perfect subject for a painting. They possess an effortless beauty and put a great demand on all of the elements required in representational painting: drawing, value, color, edges and composition.

AGELESS ATTITUDE • Painting a late-life self-portrait reveals not only what has changed but also what remains the same.

REPRISE

Every Moment Counts • Sometimes figural work veers into portraiture. Other times, it's all about gesture and the human form. When figural work is combined with an environment, the work often takes on a narrative element. Find out how Corey Pitkin, W. Truman Hosner, Margaret Dyer and Sally Strand approach their figural work and how they use a setting to capture a moment and convey mood.

Corey Pitkin • SETTING THE STORY

W. Truman Hosner • MAKING A TOTAL STATEMENT

Margaret Dyer • SIMPLIFY THE SCENE

Sally Strand • AN INTERACTIVE DANCE

BIG COUNTRY • JOHN THRELFALL melds aspects of memory, color and mark-making to strengthen the intent behind his compositions and awaken a powerful response in viewers.

PASTEL WORLD 2022 • There was plenty to love in the 2022 PastelWorld Exhibition, presented in June at the 14th convention of the International Association of Pastel Societies (IAPS). This was a show in which variety reigned supreme. From daring composition and energetic mark-making to delicate drawing and quiet color, from the gutsy and unexpected to the spare and mysterious, it was all there. IAPS President RICHARD MCKINLEY spoke to this incredible diversity when he said: “Just look at what pastel can do.” In these pages, we've selected 11 paintings to share—just a small sample from a room full of pastel marvels.
